Assist the active chapter

Some of the alumni would like to pitch in for a finals week study break for the active chapter! I think this a wonderful idea, and I know the chapter would love it. And I know the chapter would like more contact with the alumni. 

I have included a link to a paypal account to collect donations. The funds raised will go for the pizza party, if there is more than enough raised (which I hope is true) or not enough raised, the funds will go towards sending girls to Leadership Seminar and National EA Conference.

I am also in the process of contacting nationals to see what it would take to make the donations tax deductible.

Ten years...

On Friday, April 26 the Alpha Omega chapter will mark it's 10th year as a Sigma Alpha chapter.

Thank you to all sisters past and present for your contributions to this organization, as it would not be what it is today without the hard work and dedication of so many amazing women.

To celebrate the 10th year we have posted the chapter history. Here's to the past 10 years and the countless memories we have all made and we look forward to the next 10 years at Kansas State.

The process to begin the Alpha Omega chapter started on August 25, 2002. After researching and deep consideration, Sigma Alpha seemed to represent wheat the women of Kansas State University were looking for. Sigma Alpha is a professional sorority organized to foster the study of agriculture among women by promoting scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

The Alpha Omega chapter began with six members; Sarah Farlee, Samantha Duncan-Green, Emily Diener-Nichols, Elizabeth Schmidt, Katherine Schmidt, and Lynda Wright-Roberts. Recruitment for other members started on September 7, 2002. The girls looked to other agricultural organizations to recruit new members.

With two more members, Katie Reed-Carlgren and Sara Roop on board, they continued their search. After recruitment was complete an informal informational meeting was held on September 9, 2002. Fortunately, twelve ladies decided Sigma Alpha was right for them. These ladies were: Sarah Farlee, Samantha Duncan, Emily Diener-Nichols, Elizabeth Schmidt, Katherine Schmidt, Lynda Wright-Roberts, Katie Reed-Carlgren, Sara Roop, Megan Tegtmeier, Cassie Sramek, Megan Ackerman, and Amy Rugenstein.

With all of the members in place, the search for an advisor was underway. They were looking for a woman who would not only help the ladies become better leaders, but to also make them stronger women. Mary Lou Peter-Blecha became the first advisor of this chapter.

An officer team was put together to assist with leadership on November 6, 2002. The executive committee consisted of Sarah Farlee as president, Samantha Duncan-Green as vice president, Elizabeth Schmidt as secretary and Emily Diener-Nichols as treasurer.

Tough Enough To Wear Pink...

The seventh annual "Tough Enough to Wear Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness Week hosted by Kansas State University’s Collegiate Cattlewomen and Sigma Alpha Professional Agriculture Sorority will be held February 18-22, 2013 and will conclude at the Friday Night, “Tough Enough To Wear Pink” performance of the Kansas State Intercollegiate Rodeo. This annual campaign raises funds for the Mid-Kansas Susan G Komen Foundation.   

Last year, the ladies of Collegiate Cattlewomen and Sigma Alpha raised over $13,000. 

This year’s slogan is “Give Cancer the Boot.”  Tee shirts with this slogan will be sold in the K-State Student Union from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week of the campaign and at the rodeo Friday night. In addition there will be a FREE BBQ on Weber Lawn on the K-State-Manhattan Campus from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 18th. Shirts will also be available at this event. Shirts are also available online at http://ksutetwp.weebly.com. All proceeds will go towards breast cancer research. Donations of all kinds are greatly appreciated and can be given via our website, at one of our events or by contacting a member of our committee.

Let's get cooking...

The collegiate chapter will be producing a KSU Sigma Alpha cookbook. They would like alumni to contribute to the book.

Deadline to contribute is Wednesday, September 19.  Send recipes via email to knmorgan@ksu.edu. Please include your name and activation class.

This project will serve as a 2012-2013 fundraiser. They will be selling a 250 recipe cookbook for $12 each.

If you would like to pre-order a Sigma Alpha cookbook you can do so by contacting knmorgan@ksu.edu, or mail payment (checks) to Kaitlin Morgan, 1404 Harry Rd, Manhattan, KS 66502. Shipping is not included at this time in the $12, and has not yet been set. Please confirm full price with Kaitlin before payment.

The chapter is hoping that cookbooks are ready by the November 1, 2012 Family Day activity. The goal is to sell 500 cookbooks as a chapter by selling them at various activities throughout the year.

Regional Conference at KSU

The collegiate chapter will be hosting this year's Region 3 Regional Conference in Manhattan on March 30-31.

The ladies have five chapters attending the festivities and would like to extend an invitation to any alumni to join any part of the conference they are able to. In addition, there is a direct opportunity to participate by joining an alumni speaking panel on Saturday (March 31) from 10:30 to 11:30 followed by lunch.

Collegiate - Alumni Activity

Meet us in Manhattan...

The fall meeting will take place on Saturday, September 17, in Manhattan. This will be a joint tailgate and alumni meeting. 

The game is at 6:00pm so the parking lot gates open at 1 p.m. We'll plan to have our meeting at 3 p.m. and the location will be announced closer to the event.

If you would like to come to the meeting, or the tailgate (hopefully both), make sure that I (Ashley) have your phone number. I am asking for volunteers to help with this event. While the meeting is for paid alumni members only, the event is open to all Sigma Alpha alumni sisters and their families. This should be a lot of fun and game tickets are only $20 each!

Another reminder that the Sigma Alpha retreat will be August 27 in Manhattan. Contact Marinda for more information. We hope to have as many sisters there as possible to network with our active chapter and participate in an idea exchange. This is a great opportunity to meet the actives who are very excited to get to know their alumni members.

Watch for upcoming information regarding dues. You will have options when it comes to paying your K-State Sigma Alpha alumni dues, and graduating seniors will get their first year of membership free. Deadline for dues is August 31. Emily Nichols will be sending out information - so watch for it. Contact Emily if you have questions regarding dues or if you have a change in address or other information.

We encourage you to comment and interact with our collegiate sisters. Introduce yourself, write them a note or shoot them a tweet. The only way we'll help facilitate the bridge between collegiate and alumni is to make an effort.
